Nutrition.

Ah, nutrition. We all know it’s the most important factor when working towards losing or gaining weight, but it’s also the one most people avoid changing.

“Can’t I just workout an extra day instead?” or “I worked out today, so I can eat [insert food]” are both common refrains that all trainers will hear at some point.

The simple fact is that it is nearly impossible to out-train your diet. In other words, it is extremely difficult to implement a workout plan that allows you to continue to eat without restraint and still make progress.

There’s one particular cliché that I would like to address today:

“I don’t really track how much I’m eating, but I eat a ton of fruit, so it’s okay.”

Fruits are wonderful and jam-packed with nutritional value. This does not mean, however, that you can eat however much you want.

Remember that a piece of fruit is essentially a sculpture made of sugar. While there are absolute and undeniable nutritional benefits to consuming healthy doses of fruit (and you should do so!), this doesn’t mean that those calories are free.

Everything in moderation. Be sure that you are using your food, your fuel, to propel yourself towards your goals, not hold yourself back.
